The Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) project is an international competition where university teams from around the world design, build, and test a formula-style single-seater race car. The goal is to simulate a real-world development process within the automotive industry.
Formula SAE LUZ is a multidisciplinary team composed of students and professors from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Zulia. Founded in 2004, its mission is to design, build, and validate a formula-type vehicle prototype, complying with the standards of the international Formula SAE competition, organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International) in Michigan, USA.
FSAE LUZ exists because it believes in the power of applying engineering beyond the classroom. Its purpose is to bring theoretical knowledge into a real, challenging, and competitive environment, where technical, leadership, management, and teamwork skills are developed.
FSAE-LUZ's main goal is to excellently represent the University of Zulia—and by extension, the state and the country—in the international Formula SAE competition, whether in the United States or Brazil. Beyond the track, we aim to train skilled professionals, drive research and technological development, foster a passion for automotive engineering, and uphold our institution's name. FSAE-LUZ is more than just a team: it's a platform for learning, innovation, and academic pride.
To officially join FSAE LUZ, you just need to be an active student at the University of Zulia. While most of the team comes from Engineering, we welcome students from all majors: from Social Communication to Accounting, every profile adds value to the project. We have an application process where we assess your interest, skills, and availability. We don't require prior experience, just commitment, motivation, and a willingness to learn.
Being part of FSAE LUZ is a transformative experience that goes beyond building a vehicle. You'll develop skills in applied engineering by designing and validating real-world systems, master professional software like SolidWorks, CATIA, or Fusion 360, and gain experience in project management and planning. You'll also strengthen your leadership, learn to work effectively in a team, and cultivate a proactive and entrepreneurial mindset. All of this translates into a strong resume and outstanding preparation for the professional world.
We understand that each member has different responsibilities, so we adapt to your availability. However, being part of FSAE LUZ implies a real commitment to the project. We expect you to be able to dedicate some time to participate in meetings, complete assigned tasks, and attend team events or activities.
It's very simple: you just need to complete our registration form and then participate in the selection process. We're excited to learn about your interest and have you be part of this great experience!
At FSAE-LUZ, our work goes far beyond just designing and building the race car. We participate in technical training courses that strengthen our engineering and manufacturing skills, attend automotive events to learn from the industry and expand our network, actively seek sponsors to secure the resources that keep the project running, visit workshops and industrial companies to observe real processes and form strategic alliances, and manage communication and outreach for our activities to promote the team and attract new support.
The FSAE-LUZ project is sustained by various sources of support that ensure its continuity and growth, such as sponsors and financial donors who provide essential resources for acquiring materials, tools, and participating in competitions; in-kind donations, such as equipment, tools, raw materials, and automotive supplies; and training or courses that strengthen the team's technical expertise. Every contribution, whether financial or in-kind, is key for FSAE-LUZ to continue advancing and developing excellent professionals.
Even if you're not a student at the University of Zulia, you can support FSAE-LUZ in many ways. Spread the word about our project, connect us with potential partners, or support us with workshops, talks, or mentorship if you're a professional. This is a student project, but its strength grows with the support of the entire community. Thank you for adding your momentum!
